Rescue teams are combing through vehicles and structures in eastern Spain after unprecedented flash floods left at least 158 people dead. The disaster, which struck late Tuesday into early Wednesday, is the worst natural catastrophe Spain has faced this century. The region is littered with overturned vehicles, leveled buildings, uprooted trees, and impassable roads and bridges. The hardest-hit area, Valencia, accounts for 92 of the confirmed fatalities, while additional deaths occurred in Castilla La Mancha and southern Andalusia. Many people remain unaccounted for.

Bodies Discovered in Vehicles as Community Rallies to Help
Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed fatalities within stranded cars. In Valencia’s La Torre district, nine bodies were found in a parking garage, including that of a local police officer. Luis Sanchez, a welder who rescued several people near Valencia, described the harrowing scene: “I saw bodies floating by…People were crying everywhere, trapped.” Rescue efforts were further supported by firefighters prioritizing the elderly. NASA satellite images reveal vast flood-covered regions south of Valencia, where the Turia River and the overflowing Pobles del Sud lake have inundated large areas.

Paiporta Devastated as Authorities Scramble to Aid Survivors
In Paiporta, a municipality near Valencia, the death toll stands at 62. Mayor Maribel Albalat reported that many elderly residents were trapped in the town center, while others attempting to retrieve their cars from garages were caught off-guard by floodwaters. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared Valencia a disaster zone, emphasizing that the search for victims is paramount. He urged residents to stay indoors as additional storms loom.

Widespread Mourning and Calls to Action on Climate Change
With widespread destruction and an “almost apocalyptic” atmosphere, locals are grappling with the aftermath. Shops and homes bear the marks of what one witness described as “a bomb going off.” Spain has entered a three-day mourning period. Known for autumnal storms, Spain’s Mediterranean coast has never experienced a flood event of this magnitude, which scientists attribute to intensifying climate change effects.
