Residents across Houston and surrounding areas woke up Sunday to intense cold, rain, and icy conditions in several locations. Temperatures dropped to near or below freezing from Conroe to the coastal areas, raising concerns about ice formation on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain and sleet were reported in northern and western parts of the region. In some areas, a rare weather phenomenon known as “thundersleet” was observed, where freezing precipitation occurs alongside lightning and thunder.

Icy Roads Raise Risk of Accidents

Despite rainfall tapering off, falling temperatures increased the risk of black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported responding to seven major crashes, 26 minor crashes, and 27 stranded vehicles on Sunday.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors, particularly during nighttime hours when road conditions become more dangerous.

Harris County and City of Houston Issue Warnings

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said conditions were slightly better than initially expected but warned residents not to let their guard down. She noted that emergency calls were increasing as more people began venturing out. Officials advised residents to avoid highways and bridges if travel is unavoidable, as those areas are seeing the highest levels of ice accumulation.

Power Outages and CenterPoint Update

CenterPoint Energy reported that approximately 3,700 customers were without power Sunday evening, while nearly 30,000 outages had already been restored. The company stated that 99% of its customers continue to have electricity.

More than 2,700 workers remain deployed across the region, while 500 workers have been released to assist harder-hit states.

Water Main Breaks Reported

A major water main break occurred on Chimney Rock Road in Houston due to freezing temperatures, sending water shooting into the air. Houston Public Works confirmed crews responded quickly and repair work is ongoing.

Officials advised residents to shut off water and drain pipes if there is a risk of freezing to prevent further damage.

Warming Centers Remain Open

The City of Houston and Harris County have activated a total of 20 warming centers. Officials reported that approximately 940 people used the shelters Sunday night, with some centers operating at around 60% capacity.

Centers are providing hot meals, shelter, and in some locations, accommodations for crated pets.

Schools and Government Offices Closed

All public school districts in Texas Region 4 announced closures for Monday due to extreme cold. Harris County, Fort Bend County, and most City of Houston offices will also remain closed.

Court proceedings have been suspended, and jurors are not required to report.

Public Transportation Partially Restored

Metro Houston announced that local bus service will resume fully by noon Monday, while rail service will operate on a limited schedule. Park and Ride services will remain suspended.

Transportation to medical facilities and warming centers will be prioritized.

More Cold Weather Ahead

Forecasters warn that hard freeze conditions will continue through Monday and Tuesday nights, with temperatures dropping into the teens in some areas. Gradual improvement is expected beginning Tuesday as sunshine returns.

Officials urge residents to rely only on official sources for information, avoid spreading misinformation, and prioritize safety during the ongoing winter weather event.
