Residents across the region were urged to remain at home Sunday evening as rapidly falling temperatures increased the risk of dangerous road conditions. Officials warned that moisture left behind from earlier rain, freezing rain, and sleet could quickly turn to ice as temperatures fall below freezing.

Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough cautioned residents against traveling, saying temperatures began dropping again Sunday morning and were not expected to rise above freezing. He warned that overpasses and bridges posed a serious risk due to lingering moisture and potential black ice formation. Keough said county and state road crews were actively treating roadways but strongly advised the public to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Harris County Officials Warn of Worsening Road Conditions

Although precipitation had stopped, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said road conditions remained hazardous. He reported deputies responding to crashes continuously as black ice formed across the metro area.

Gonzalez said the freezing line continued to push southeast, with temperatures in the 20s across western Harris County. He warned that any remaining water on roads, especially on bridges and elevated sections, was freezing rapidly. Drivers who must travel were advised to reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid overpasses whenever possible.
