While Alaska battled the aftermath of Typhoon Halong, the East Coast faced a powerful Nor’easter, bringing torrential rain, coastal flooding, and fierce winds from the Carolinas to New England.

By Sunday afternoon, heavy rain and gusts up to 56 mph lashed regions from Virginia to Massachusetts, causing hundreds of flight delays and widespread power outages.

In South Carolina, the town of Georgetown recorded over 10 inches of rain, while parts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks saw homes surrounded by rising water.
First responders in Columbus County, North Carolina, performed up to a dozen water rescues as local authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded roads.

“The water is rising. Please stay off the roads and drive carefully,” warned Sheriff Bill Rogers in a public safety message.

States of Emergency and Flood Warnings

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency Saturday night in anticipation of major flooding, high winds, and heavy rainfall.
Coastal flooding was later reported across New Jersey and Delaware, particularly during high tide on Sunday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued coastal flood warnings for New York City’s boroughs — Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island — predicting water levels 1.5 to 2.5 feet above ground and warning of “widespread moderate flooding.”

“Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters,” NWS cautioned. “Six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet, and one foot can carry away a car.”

Air Travel Disrupted and Power Outages Spread

Air traffic across the Northeast was heavily disrupted.
By Sunday evening:

  • Boston Logan International Airport reported 80 cancellations and 400 delays.
  • LaGuardia Airport recorded 40 cancellations and over 500 delays.
  • Newark Liberty and JFK Airport also faced extended delays and temporary ground stops.

As the storm moved northward, power outages hit thousands:

  • 10,000+ in North Carolina
  • 5,000 in Massachusetts
  • 4,000 each in New York and New Jersey

The Nor’easter is expected to continue dumping 1–3 inches of rain — with some regions seeing up to 8 inches — before moving offshore by Tuesday.

While Alaska reels from the destructive remnants of Typhoon Halong, the U.S. East Coast remains under siege from a relentless Nor’easter. Both disasters have triggered widespread flooding, flight disruptions, and emergency responses, leaving authorities racing to restore safety and stability from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
