The Washington Post has experienced over 200,000 digital subscription cancellations—about 8% of its paid readership—following owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to prevent the editorial board from endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. The decision, made just weeks before Election Day, has ignited backlash from both readers and Post staff.

Resignations and Staff Criticism

The decision led to several staff resignations, including Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist David Hoffman, who called the move “untenable and unconscionable.” In his resignation letter, Hoffman warned of the “very real threat of autocracy” posed by former President Donald Trump and expressed disappointment in what he described as the diminishing role of the Post’s editorials as a “beacon of light.”

Bezos Defends Decision Amid Accusations

In an opinion piece, Bezos addressed the criticism, arguing that the decision aimed to protect the paper’s “independence” and avoid “perception of bias.” He denied any business-related motives, countering rumors that the choice was linked to Blue Origin’s government contracts or a recent meeting between Blue Origin executives and Trump. “There is no quid pro quo at play,” Bezos insisted, acknowledging that the timing may appear suspicious but asserting that maintaining editorial neutrality was his primary intent.

Internal and Industry Reactions

Former Post Executive Editor Marty Baron criticized the timing, suggesting that an earlier decision would have reduced suspicions. Current Executive and Publisher Will Lewis framed the move as a “return to the Post’s roots,” yet internal sources report widespread skepticism among the staff. In response, columnist Alexandra Petri and others voiced disappointment in widely read op-eds, highlighting concerns about the publication’s direction and independence.
