Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting didn’t hold back when discussing a heated exchange between Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test.
“Virat walked across the pitch and instigated that confrontation—there’s no doubt in my mind,” Ponting said on the Seven Network. “I’m sure the umpires and referee will take a close look at it.”

Shoulder Bump Sparks Controversy
The incident occurred after the 10th over when Kohli and Konstas bumped shoulders. Kohli appeared to initiate the contact, while Konstas turned in surprise. Kohli’s reaction suggested he blamed the Australian teenager.
Fellow Australian opener Usman Khawaja intervened as a peacemaker, putting an arm around Kohli to diffuse the situation. Moments later, Konstas responded in style, hitting Jasprit Bumrah’s first ball in the next over for four on his way to an impressive 60 runs.
Konstas Reflects on the Incident
Speaking to the Seven Network, Konstas downplayed the clash:
“I think emotions got to both of us. I was adjusting my gloves, and then a little shoulder charge happened. It’s just cricket.”
On-Field Drama and Resilience
Umpire Michael Gough addressed both players following the incident. Despite the tension, the 19-year-old Konstas displayed remarkable composure on debut, attacking Bumrah—ranked the world’s No. 1 bowler—who had dominated Australia in earlier matches.

Konstas’ brilliant 60 from 65 balls, including a partnership with Usman Khawaja, gave Australia a strong start. He was eventually dismissed lbw by Ravindra Jadeja just before lunch, but his innings is already being celebrated as a memorable debut.
Ponting’s Take on the Impact
“(Konstas) has definitely gotten up their nose a little bit,” Ponting remarked. “Yes, he’s flustered them. Yes, he’s frustrated them.”
Kohli’s Melbourne Struggles Continue
Kohli’s Boxing Day Test got off to a rough start, following a confrontation with local reporters for filming his family at the airport. Beyond his unbeaten century in the first Test, Kohli has struggled in the series, failing to score more than 11 in subsequent innings.

With the Border-Gavaskar series tied at 1-1, India is relying on Kohli to deliver a significant performance at the MCG. However, his fiery temperament and inconsistent form have added pressure to the star batter’s visit to Melbourne.
