A train driver in France tragically ended his life by jumping from a moving train on Christmas Day, resulting in significant delays and impacting thousands of passengers.
Delays Affect Thousands
France’s national railway company, SNCF, confirmed that the incident caused widespread disruptions in rail traffic. Nearly 3,000 passengers experienced delays on trains running between Paris and southeastern France.
High-Speed Train Services Impacted
Approximately 10 high-speed (TGV) trains were delayed by up to five hours due to the tragedy. The Melun prosecutor’s office, located southeast of Paris, stated that the driver appeared to have jumped from the moving train, with his body discovered near the tracks.
Emergency System Activation
The prosecutor’s office explained that the train’s “automatic emergency system” was triggered, stopping the train when the driver did not take manual control.
Ongoing Investigation
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the driver’s death. SNCF confirmed the suicide, stating that passenger safety was never compromised and train services are now gradually being restored.
