US Representative Sylvester Turner, a Texas Democrat and former mayor of Houston, has passed away at the age of 70, just two months after beginning his first term in Congress.
Medical Emergency and Previous Health Struggles
Turner experienced a medical emergency on Tuesday night following President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, as reported by House Democratic lawmakers. He had a history of battling bone cancer.

Witnesses noted that Turner appeared distressed earlier on Tuesday in the underground tunnel linking the Capitol and the Cannon Building. Capitol Police were notified and provided assistance. Despite this, he attended Trump’s joint address to Congress that evening, where he was seen seated toward the back of the chamber. Several Democratic colleagues interacted with him on the House floor before the event.
Confirmation of His Death
House Minority Whip Katherine Clark confirmed Turner’s death during a closed-door Democratic meeting on Wednesday morning.

A Legacy of Public Service
Elected to Congress in November 2024, Turner had previously served as mayor of Houston for eight years and spent over 25 years in the Texas state legislature. He won his congressional seat following the death of longtime Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a close ally, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in July 2024. Local Democratic leaders chose Turner to replace her on the ballot, and he won the election comfortably.
Turner was sworn into office on January 3, 2025. His death creates a vacancy in the Texas congressional delegation, prompting Democratic leaders to decide on the process for filling his seat.

Tributes from the Pakistani Community
Turner was well-regarded within the Pakistani community. Prominent figures such as Saeed Ghani, Muhammad Tahir Javed, Rehan Siddiqi, and Ali Sheikhani have expressed their condolences and fond memories of him, remembering his contributions and the positive impact he made.
