In a historic first, the New York Police Department (NYPD) Headquarters hosted a Crescent Lighting Ceremony to commemorate the holy month of Ramadan. This landmark event highlighted the department’s recognition of its Muslim-American community and their contributions.
Commissioner Tisch and Muslim Officers Light the Crescent
The ceremony was led by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, alongside Muslim Officers Society President Captain Waheed Akhtar and other senior officials. Together, they illuminated a golden crescent installed in the headquarters’ lobby by pressing an electric button. This crescent will remain lit throughout Ramadan as a symbol of the month’s spiritual significance.

Acknowledging the Contributions of Muslim Officers
During her speech, Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized the importance of fasting as one of Islam’s five pillars and recognized the contributions of over 3,000 Muslim officers serving in the NYPD. She extended her warm Ramadan greetings to them, reinforcing the department’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
A New Tradition for the Muslim Community
Captain Waheed Akhtar, President of the Muslim Officers Society, described the event as the beginning of a new tradition at the NYPD. He expressed gratitude to Commissioner Tisch for her support in making this historic moment possible, ensuring it will be remembered by the Muslim community for years to come.

Special Prayers Mark the Conclusion
