President Joe Biden cast his early ballot for the 2024 general election on Monday at the Delaware Department of Elections, just outside his Wilmington home. Despite choosing not to run for re-election due to health concerns and party considerations, Biden remains deeply engaged in the process, supporting a new wave of Democratic candidates.
Engaging with Voters and Assisting in the Line
As he waited in line for approximately 40 minutes, Biden chatted with fellow voters and even helped push a woman in a wheelchair. After presenting his identification to an election worker, he signed in and was announced as “Joseph Biden now voting.” Cheers erupted as the president cast his vote behind a privacy screen, with particular applause for first-time voters in the room.

A New Generation of Democratic Hopefuls
This election season marks a shift for Biden, who has been a constant presence in Delaware politics since 1970. Now, he is backing a new wave of Democratic leaders, including:
- Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden endorsed after stepping down, aiming to become the first Black woman and first South Asian American president.
- State Senator Sarah McBride, a close Biden family friend and former aide, who is running to be the first openly transgender member of the U.S. House.
- Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware’s first Black woman representative, aiming to transition to the U.S. Senate.
Support for Lisa Blunt Rochester
On Monday, Biden had breakfast with Blunt Rochester, whom he endorsed over the weekend, calling her “Delaware through and through” in a campaign video. Biden’s connection with the Blunt family dates back decades; he campaigned with Blunt Rochester’s father, Ted Blunt, a former Wilmington City Council president. Blunt Rochester aims to succeed retiring Senator Tom Carper, who has held Delaware’s Senate seat since 2001.

Early Voting in Full Swing in Delaware
