Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has downplayed statements by Richard Grenell, the nominee for US presidential envoy for special missions, calling for the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Asif said the government does not expect Grenell’s remarks to have any “repercussions” on US-Pakistan relations.

Grenell’s Comments Spark Renewed Attention On Nov. 26, Grenell posted on X, formerly Twitter, demanding Khan’s release, saying: “Release Imran Khan!” In another post, Grenell referred to Khan as Pakistan’s “Trump-like leader” and condemned his imprisonment on what he called “phony charges,” urging an end to political prosecutions worldwide. The online posts gained momentum after US President-elect Donald Trump announced Grenell’s appointment, fueling hopes among Khan’s supporters that his release might become a priority when Trump takes office on January 20, 2025.

Asif: “No Pressure from the US” In an interview with Independent Urdu on Monday, Asif dismissed concerns about potential US pressure following Grenell’s remarks:

“In American politics, different individuals and parties have their own priorities and views. However, in terms of government-to-government relations, tweets or statements like these are insignificant. I do not think there will be any repercussions at any level,” Asif said.

Imran Khan’s Political Struggles Continue Imran Khan, who was ousted from office through a parliamentary vote in April 2022, has been in jail since August 2023. He faces charges ranging from corruption to leaking state secrets—allegations he claims are fabricated to sideline him politically. Khan blames the coalition government and the powerful military for his imprisonment, while both parties deny interfering in politics.

Despite his imprisonment, Khan remains a popular figure in Pakistan. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continues to draw massive public support through rallies and protests demanding his release.

PTI Rallies Turn Deadly The PTI has staged several large-scale rallies to increase public pressure. In the latest demonstration last month, violent clashes broke out in Islamabad’s heavily-policed Red Zone, leading to the deaths of four security personnel and 12 PTI supporters. Security forces raided the protest site, which is near key government buildings, diplomatic offices, and the Supreme Court.

PTI Candidates Dominate Despite Ban Ahead of Pakistan’s February 8, 2024, general elections, PTI was barred from participating as a political entity. However, its candidates ran as independents and won the most seats in the election. Despite this, they fell short of securing a majority to form a government.

Khan’s imprisonment and legal troubles prevent him from holding any government position, but his widespread support remains evident. Millions of voters backed his allies, signaling Khan’s continued influence on Pakistan’s political landscape.
