OpenAI announced on Monday that it is making its ChatGPT-powered search feature accessible to all users, significantly stepping up competition with Google’s search dominance. Previously, the real-time search feature was limited to paying subscribers when introduced in late October.
Real-Time Search for Fast and Reliable Answers
The new feature allows ChatGPT to provide up-to-date, real-time answers with links to relevant sources, eliminating the need for traditional search engines. OpenAI highlighted that this upgrade ensures “fast, timely answers” while offering users a more streamlined experience.
“Search for Everyone, Everywhere”
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, stated in a YouTube video:
“We’re bringing search to all logged-in free users of ChatGPT. That means it’ll be available globally on every platform where you use ChatGPT.”
The updated interface resembles Google’s search results, but without ads. It also aligns closely with Perplexity AI, a conversational search engine that references its web sources directly.
Improving the ChatGPT Experience
Adam Fry, ChatGPT’s Search Product Lead, emphasized that this update enhances the ChatGPT experience:
“We’re really just making the ChatGPT experience better with up-to-date information from the web.”
The rollout begins immediately for hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
Search Integrated Directly into ChatGPT
Instead of launching a standalone product, OpenAI has seamlessly integrated search functionality into ChatGPT. Users can enable search either by default or manually using a search icon.
Taking on Google and Microsoft’s AI Search Efforts
AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude have traditionally relied on limited datasets with time cutoffs, leading to outdated information. Google and Microsoft, however, have combined AI-generated responses with live web results in their search engines.
This move further highlights OpenAI’s close ties to Microsoft, a major investor aiming to boost its Bing search engine in competition with Google.
OpenAI’s Ambition to Dominate the Internet Space
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has positioned the company as a rising Internet powerhouse, securing a valuation of $157 billion in a recent fundraising round with backing from Microsoft, SoftBank, and Nvidia.
Scaling Up Comes at a Cost
As OpenAI attracts new users with its enhanced search capabilities, the company’s computing demands and operational costs are expected to rise significantly.
