FEMA has announced that federal disaster assistance is now available to members of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe following severe storms and straight-line winds that struck the area on June 21, 2025.
Federal Support for Individuals and Families
The President’s action enables federal funding to assist affected individuals and families. This support may include grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and replacement of personal property damaged during the storm.
Funding for Tribal Facilities and Emergency Work
In addition, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe can access federal funding on a cost-sharing basis to carry out emergency work and repair or replace tribal facilities affected by the severe weather.
Federal Coordination for Recovery Efforts

Frederic Kaehler has been appointed as the Federal Coordinating Officer to oversee recovery operations in the impacted areas. Additional appointments may be made if requested by the Tribal Nation or if further damage assessments indicate the need.
How Tribal Members Can Apply for Assistance
Tribal members who experienced losses should first submit claims to their insurance providers. Following that, they can apply for FEMA assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362. Those using relay services, such as video relay service (VRS) or captioned telephone service, should provide FEMA with the corresponding service number.
FEMA Assistance and Additional Resources
FEMA assistance aims to restore homes to a safe, sanitary, and functional condition but cannot cover all disaster-related losses. To support survivors more comprehensively, FEMA collaborates with other government and non-government agencies, including the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA offers low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, business owners, and non-profits to help recover losses not fully covered by insurance, FEMA grants, or other resources.
