As a potential halt in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits looms due to the federal government shutdown, DoorDash is stepping up to support millions of Americans facing food insecurity.

Through its Project DASH initiative, DoorDash will deliver 1 million meals for free in November, supporting over 300 food bank and pantry partners nationwide. In addition, the company is waiving delivery and service fees for an estimated 300,000 grocery orders for SNAP recipients at Sprouts, Dollar General, Schnucks, Ahold Delhaize brands, Hy-Vee, Giant Eagle, and Wegmans. DoorDash is also donating fresh food, shelf-stable items, and household essentials from DashMart stores to local food banks.

The shutdown threatens SNAP benefits for more than 40 million Americans—including 21 million children, 16 million working families, and 5 million seniors. As federal funds run out, families face an increasing risk of hunger, while food banks struggle to meet soaring demand.

“No one should go hungry in America—period,” said Max Rettig, Vice President and Global Head of Public Policy at DoorDash. “Millions of families are worried right now about how they’ll put food on the table. Fighting hunger is core to our mission, and we’re stepping up alongside leading grocers to help bridge the gap. This is a stopgap, not a solution, but doing nothing isn’t an option.”

Eric Mitchell, President of the Alliance to End Hunger, added, “The food security of millions who rely on SNAP is at dire risk. Companies and organizations like DoorDash can help fill the gap, but the only viable solution is restoring SNAP benefits quickly and fully. We will continue working to ensure that happens.”

DoorDash’s Emergency Food Response Includes:

  • 1 million meals for 300+ Project DASH partners nationwide: DoorDash is waiving merchant fees for all Project DASH partner food banks, pantries, and community organizations throughout November.

  • Fee-free grocery deliveries for SNAP recipients: DoorDash and partner grocers are covering delivery and service fees for an estimated 300,000 orders in November. SNAP/EBT cardholders can shop at participating grocery stores through DoorDash with fees waived on one order.

  • Donations to local food banks: DashMart stores will provide fresh food, shelf-stable items, and household essentials to communities affected by SNAP disruptions.

DoorDash emphasized that while its efforts provide immediate relief, they cannot replace the federal government’s role. The company is urging Congress to act quickly to continue funding SNAP, while encouraging companies, organizations, and individuals to donate food, funds, or time to support those most in need.
