Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled plans to impose a ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, aiming to protect the mental health of young people. Social media platforms will be held accountable for enforcing the restriction or face possible fines.

New Legislation to Hold Social Media Platforms Responsible

Albanese confirmed that new legislation will be introduced later this month, making social media companies responsible for restricting access for users under 16. “The responsibility will fall on social media platforms to prove they are taking adequate measures to prevent access. Parents and young people will not be penalized,” he stated. Penalties will apply only to non-compliant platforms.

A Part of a Broader Effort to Regulate Tech Companies

This measure is part of a wider initiative by Albanese’s center-left Labour government to regulate tech giants, whom he holds accountable for the rise of misinformation and mental health challenges. Australia’s government has previously taken action against major tech companies, including a 2021 move to force Facebook and Google to pay for news content. More recently, the government sued Elon Musk’s X Corp. for failing to remove a video depicting a terrorist attack in Sydney.

Focus on Misinformation and Mental Health Protection

In addition to the social media age restriction, the government is working on new legislation to address the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Although discussions with tech companies are ongoing, Albanese’s administration has not yet clarified which platforms will be affected or provided specifics on enforcement mechanisms and penalties. The Prime Minister acknowledged that while this legislation may not fully prevent underage social media use, it is a crucial step toward safeguarding young users’ mental health.
