With just one week remaining until runners line up for the Chevron Houston Marathon, weather conditions point toward a cool and brisk start to race day.

As marathon weekend approaches, current forecasts give runners a good idea of what to expect. Temperatures mentioned here are listed in Fahrenheit, with Celsius equivalents provided for international participants.

Based on available forecast models, early Sunday morning conditions are expected to be on the cooler side. Elite runners will begin the marathon at approximately 6:55 a.m., when temperatures are likely to be in the low to mid-40s Fahrenheit, or around 7 degrees Celsius. These readings are considered normal for early January in Houston.

Runners should note that these temperatures do not factor in wind speed or cloud cover, both of which can make conditions feel colder than the actual reading. Standing still in the corrals before the race begins may feel especially chilly.

Compared to recent years, this year’s marathon does not appear to be as cold as the events held in 2024 and 2025. However, temperatures later in the day may still struggle to climb above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 15 degrees Celsius.

Looking further back, the coldest Houston Marathon on record occurred in 1997, when the race was held on January 12. That year, runners faced freezing temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit along with sleet, conditions that favored athletes accustomed to colder climates, particularly runners from Sweden and Germany.

Overall, the expected weather for this year’s marathon aligns closely with historical trends. Forecast highs are projected to remain slightly below the 15-year average, keeping conditions cool throughout the day.

Bottom line, marathon participants should plan for a cold start. Wearing disposable layers, light jackets or gloves can help runners stay warm while waiting at the starting line, with the option to discard extra clothing once the race is underway.
