US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, highlighted the United States’ ongoing partnership with Pakistan to address climate change, with a focus on renewable energy, water management, and smart agriculture. These efforts are aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s resilience in the face of climate challenges.
US Investment in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
During his remarks at the launch of the Climate Smart Agriculture Activity at the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad, Ambassador Blome announced that the US has contributed $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund. This funding will support climate mitigation and adaptation projects in Pakistan, helping the country tackle the ongoing climate crisis. He noted that these investments are unlocking millions of dollars in projects that aim to enhance Pakistan’s climate resilience.
Impact on Agriculture: Supporting Rural Households and Economic Growth
Ambassador Blome emphasized the significant impact of US investments in agriculture, which have benefited over one million rural households across Pakistan. Through these investments, US initiatives have helped increase the sales value of farms and agricultural businesses by over $1.47 billion, while creating more than 100,000 new jobs. “From the ‘Green Revolution’ to the ‘Green Alliance,’ the United States and Pakistan have worked together to improve the livelihoods of our people,” Blome stated, expressing excitement about the future innovations that will arise from these joint efforts.
Addressing the Growing Threats to Pakistan’s Agriculture
Ambassador Blome also discussed the escalating climate risks faced by Pakistani farmers, including unpredictable weather patterns, heatwaves, and irregular rainfall. These challenges are making it increasingly difficult for farmers to grow crops that sustain their families and the nation’s food supply. “Together, we are working to help Pakistan become more resilient to these climate threats,” Blome said, reaffirming the US commitment to supporting Pakistan in overcoming these hurdles.
Climate Smart Agriculture: A Collaborative, Five-Year Investment
The US-funded Climate Smart Agriculture Activity is a five-year initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Blome explained that this program will partner with farmer organizations, local businesses, and research institutions to improve farming practices and enhance technological innovations. The focus will be on introducing new digital tools, advancing business models, and providing financing and international connections to help Pakistan’s agricultural sector thrive in the face of climate change.
Building a Resilient Future Together
Ambassador Blome concluded by expressing confidence in the positive outcomes of the partnership between the US and Pakistan, stating, “I look forward to seeing what discoveries and innovations will grow from the seeds we are planting today.” This collaboration is part of a broader effort to help Pakistan adapt to climate change while promoting sustainable agricultural practices and economic development.
