The Biden administration called on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and maintain calm as political protests surged across the country. In a statement on Tuesday, US State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and restraint from both protesters and the authorities.
“We urge protesters to demonstrate peacefully and avoid violence, while also calling on Pakistani authorities to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Miller said during a press briefing.
Escalating Protests Over Imran Khan’s Imprisonment
The protests, led by supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, have intensified over demands for his release from jail and accusations of electoral irregularities during the February elections. Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, called for his supporters to gather in Islamabad to challenge what he called a “looted mandate.”
The protests escalated on Sunday as demonstrators approached Islamabad, leading to violent clashes with security forces. At least one police officer was killed, and more than 20 others were injured, according to Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. In response, Pakistan increased security in the capital by deploying Rangers and additional police forces.

Pakistan Army Deployed in Islamabad Amid Escalating Violence
As tensions rose following violent protests, Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior announced the deployment of the Pakistan Army in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist in maintaining law and order.
The move follows violent clashes between PTI supporters and security forces, with authorities giving security personnel instructions to take decisive action, including the use of extreme measures, such as shooting rioters on sight. Additionally, the army has been authorized to impose curfews if deemed necessary.
Violent Clashes Lead to Loss of Life
The situation worsened as protesters clashed with security forces on the Srinagar Highway in Islamabad. During these clashes, a vehicle rammed into Rangers personnel, resulting in the deaths of four Rangers officials and two policemen. Meanwhile, in Rawalpindi, armed individuals threw stones and opened fire on security forces, injuring a Ranger who was critically wounded and transferred to the hospital.
Security forces have pledged to take all necessary measures to counter terrorism and ensure public safety amid the escalating violence.
