US Ambassador Donald Blome underscored the increasing number of Pakistani students pursuing higher education in the United States, marking a significant boost in educational collaboration between the two countries. Speaking at the annual EducationUSA High Achievers’ and Counsellors’ Recognition Ceremony, held during International Education Week, the ambassador celebrated this upward trend.
Record-Setting Numbers
Ambassador Blome shared remarkable statistics about Pakistani students in the US:
- 2022-23 Academic Year: 10,000 Pakistani students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree programs—the highest number ever recorded—placing Pakistan 16th globally for students sent to the US.
- 2023-24 Academic Year: 11,000 students enrolled, pushing Pakistan to 15th place worldwide, setting another record.
“Approximately one-third of these students are pursuing bachelor’s degrees, and I hope many of you here today will join them next year,” the ambassador encouraged the high achievers.
Support Through EducationUSA
Ambassador Blome praised EducationUSA as a vital resource for students navigating the US higher education system. It offers free guidance on selecting colleges, securing scholarships, and crafting strong applications. He urged students to utilize this support, reflecting on his personal experience helping his children with college applications.
The Role of Families and Counsellors
Acknowledging the critical role of parents, the ambassador asked students to stand and applaud their families for their support. He emphasized the importance of school counsellors in guiding students through the often-daunting process of selecting among over 4,000 US higher education institutions.
“We deeply appreciate your efforts to learn about our system and share that knowledge with students,” Mr. Blome said, announcing expanded US Embassy support for counsellors to visit the US and enhance their expertise.
Encouraging Future Leaders
The ambassador celebrated the achievements of Pakistani students who have studied in the US, returned home, and excelled in various fields, serving as an inspiration for others. He concluded by congratulating high achievers and counsellors for their ambition and optimism, expressing his hope to see many of them contribute to the US-Pakistan educational partnership in the future.
“Keep the United States in mind as you plan your education and careers,” he urged the audience.
