The University of Houston (UH) continues its upward trajectory in national recognition, climbing to No. 43 among public universities in the latest Forbes rankings of America’s Top Colleges for 2026. Overall, UH rose eight places to No. 107 among all U.S. colleges and universities and now ranks No. 78 nationally among research universities, up from No. 85.
“This recognition by Forbes is a strong reflection of UH’s growing prominence on the national stage,” said. “It highlights the University’s commitment to student success, academic excellence, and social mobility for students from all backgrounds.”
The Forbes rankings evaluate the top 500 colleges and universities in the U.S. based on key indicators, including return on investment, student debt levels, graduation rates, alumni salaries, and student retention. UH’s improvement demonstrates strong performance across these measures:
- Higher Graduation Rates – UH’s overall six-year graduation rate stands at 65%, above state and national averages.
- Faster Completion – Students graduate on average in 4.7 years, compared to 5.6 years in 2011, reducing costs and accelerating career entry.
- Equity in Outcomes – Economically disadvantaged students, including Pell Grant recipients, graduate at nearly the same rate as their peers.
- Lower Student Debt – UH students graduate with the lowest average student loan debt among Texas Tier One universities.
This recognition follows UH’s strong performance in other national rankings. Earlier this year, UH ranked No. 42 in The Princeton Review’s “Best Value Colleges” for 2025, underscoring its academic quality, affordability, and career outcomes. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report places UH among the Top 75 universities nationally and ranks it No. 36 for social mobility, reflecting UH’s commitment to helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds move up the economic ladder.
The Forbes achievement is another step toward UH’s institutional vision of being ranked among the Top 50 public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
