UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concerns over the role of unregulated social media networks and artificial intelligence (AI) in spreading hate speech and inciting violence. Speaking at the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) in Cascais, Portugal, on Tuesday, he called for urgent action to curb these dangers.
Digital Platforms Accelerate Hate and Disinformation
“Uncontrolled digital platforms and AI have amplified humanity’s worst impulses, giving hate speech unprecedented speed and reach,” Guterres said during a session titled “Upending Hate.” He warned that this unchecked spread of misinformation often leads to violence.

Deepfakes and Lies Fuel Bigotry
Guterres highlighted the dangers of deepfake technology, which can make fabricated and unverifiable content appear credible instantly. He condemned the rise of misinformation fueling anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bigotry, and attacks on minority Christian communities.
Call for Peace and Mutual Respect
The UN chief also reiterated his calls for peace in conflict zones, including Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Sudan. He emphasized the need to promote cultural diversity, religious pluralism, and mutual respect, which align with the UNAOC’s mission.
UNAOC’s Role in Building Bridges
The UNAOC, established in 2005 by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and co-sponsored by Spain and Turkiye, aims to foster interfaith and intercultural dialogue. This year’s forum, running from November 25-27, has brought together presidents, ministers, and international leaders to address global challenges.
Guterres urged collective efforts to combat the misuse of technology, stressing the importance of safeguarding societies from the growing threats of digital hate and disinformation.
