Storming a male bastion, 26-year-old Nigerian is grateful she can inspire others

A UAE pizza company claims to have made history by hiring the country’s first female food delivery driver.

Gift Solomon, originally from Nigeria, moved to the Emirates five years ago to support her family. She currently works as an assistant manager at Freedom Pizza in Dubai, but has also chosen to take on a role in deliveries. Passionate about her job, Solomon enjoys the freedom she feels while on the road. “The best time for me to think is when I’m driving—about home, where I was before. When I’m on the road, I feel free,” she said. For Solomon, delivering food goes beyond the task itself. “It’s an opportunity to be part of someone’s day.”

Freedom Pizza’s founder and CEO, Ian Ohan, emphasized the importance of recognizing the individuals behind each delivery. “Behind every delicious meal is a beautiful person with a story worth knowing,” he said. “We believe in investing in our team, their futures, and their talents. Human capability, spirit, and brilliance should never be hidden. Women’s rights are human rights.”

The company has also been a vocal advocate for improved safety measures for its drivers, providing high-quality jackets, boots, and well-maintained motorbikes. Under UAE labor laws, employers are required to protect their employees from potential work-related injuries. Freedom Pizza hires all its drivers directly, offering them a proper monthly wage and statutory benefits. The company also ensures drivers are never penalized for late deliveries, encouraging safe driving and adherence to protocols.

Solomon took the job to support her parents, proudly stating, “I drive for my family. As a daughter, I want to support them.” She believes the role isn’t exclusive to men and hopes to inspire other women to join her. “Instead of saying ‘Hey brother’ on the Freedom bike, I want to say, ‘Hey sister, I’m doing it. You can too.'”

In a statement to The National, Freedom Pizza confirmed they are currently the only company in the UAE employing a female motorbike delivery driver, having conducted thorough research before achieving this milestone.
