US President-elect Donald Trump has extended a formal invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration on January 20, CBS reported. The gesture comes amidst escalating tensions between the two nations over trade and security issues. The invitation was reportedly sent in early November, shortly after Trump’s victory in the November 5 presidential election. It remains unclear if Xi has accepted the invitation.

Communication Despite Strained Relations
Speaking to NBC News on Friday, Trump said he “got along very well” with Xi and confirmed they had communicated as recently as this week. However, relations remain strained due to policy disagreements and Trump’s stance on trade.

China Hawks in Key Positions
Trump’s incoming administration features several notable China critics, including Senator Marco Rubio, tapped as secretary of state. The appointments underscore a tougher approach toward Beijing in Trump’s policies.

Tariff Threats Over Fentanyl and Trade Practices
Trump has announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods unless Beijing takes stronger measures to curb the trafficking of fentanyl, a deadly narcotic. On the campaign trail, Trump threatened tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese imports to address trade imbalances.

Warnings from China
In late November, Chinese state media cautioned Trump against escalating tariffs, warning that such actions could lead to a destructive trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The diplomatic exchange sets the stage for a challenging start to the Trump-Xi relationship as global attention turns to Washington on January 20.
