President-elect Donald Trump has announced that billionaire Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The two leaders will work together to streamline federal agencies and tackle inefficiencies within the U.S. government.
A Mission to Overhaul Government Bureaucracy
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Trump outlined the department’s primary goals: dismantling government bureaucracy, reducing excessive regulations, eliminating wasteful spending, and restructuring federal agencies. Trump likened the initiative to a modern-day “Manhattan Project,” referring to the ambitious scope of the mission.
“This will be potentially the ‘Manhattan Project’ of our time,” Trump said, highlighting that Republican politicians have long dreamed of achieving the objectives outlined for DOGE. The department will focus on creating a more efficient government to improve the lives of American citizens, Trump added.

Focusing on Waste and Fraud in Government Spending
One of the core missions of DOGE will be to address inefficiencies in the federal budget. Trump emphasized the importance of tackling the estimated $6.5 trillion in government spending, particularly waste and fraud. “We will drive out the massive waste and fraud that exists in our annual government spending. Together, they will help liberate our economy and ensure that the government is accountable to the American people,” Trump said.
A Vision for a Leaner, More Efficient Government by 2026
Trump also set a clear timeline for the department’s work, with a goal to complete the project by July 4, 2026—coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He expressed confidence that Musk and Ramaswamy would succeed in their mission to create a smaller, more efficient government that would be a “perfect gift to America” on this historic milestone.
Ramaswamy Withdraws from Senate Consideration
Vivek Ramaswamy, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump since suspending his own presidential campaign earlier in 2024, confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that he would be withdrawing from consideration for the Ohio Senate seat. He acknowledged the challenges of filling the late Senator JD Vance’s seat and pledged to assist whoever Governor Mike DeWine appoints.
Musk and Ramaswamy: Outside Advice and Structural Reform
Trump emphasized that Musk and Ramaswamy would provide vital “advice and guidance from outside of government.” The two will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to drive structural reforms and introduce a more entrepreneurial approach to government operations. Musk, in particular, has been a significant figure in Trump’s campaign, actively participating in outreach efforts in key battleground states ahead of the 2024 election.
Musk’s Response: A Battle Against Bureaucracy
In response to his appointment, Musk expressed his view on Twitter, stating: “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” This reflects his commitment to reducing the influence of government bureaucracy, which he believes has grown too powerful.
Musk’s Support for Trump Following July Attack
The tech mogul, who had previously supported Democratic presidential candidates, including President Joe Biden, switched his endorsement to Trump after a failed assassination attempt on the former president on July 13, 2024. Musk’s support of Trump has been a significant development in the 2024 election cycle.
