President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to abolish daylight saving time (DST) upon taking office. In a social media post on Friday, Trump stated, “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient and very costly to our Nation.”

A Long-Standing Debate
Daylight saving time, which involves setting clocks forward in spring and back in fall to maximize daylight during summer, has faced criticism since its introduction as a wartime measure in 1942. While intended to conserve energy, its relevance has diminished over time, prompting periodic calls for its abolition.

The Push for Permanent Time
Efforts to eliminate DST have surfaced in Congress, most notably through the Sunshine Protection Act. Sponsored by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, the bipartisan bill proposed making daylight saving time permanent but has since stalled. Rubio, tapped by Trump to lead the State Department, was a prominent advocate of the measure.

“Changing the clock twice a year is outdated and unnecessary,” said Senator Rick Scott of Florida when the Senate initially approved the bill.

Health Experts Favor Standard Time
Many health professionals argue for permanent standard time instead of daylight saving time. Groups like the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine contend that standard time aligns better with human biology and natural sunlight patterns, making it healthier for individuals.

A Global Patchwork of Time Practices
Globally, most countries do not observe daylight saving time, and those that do often vary in the timing of clock changes, complicating international time coordination. Within the U.S., Arizona and Hawaii have already opted out, maintaining the same time year-round.

What’s Next?
If Trump’s pledge becomes a legislative priority, the United States could join the majority of the world in abandoning the time-switching practice, a change that could simplify schedules and address long-standing public concerns.
