A devastating crash in California this week left two sisters dead after a high-speed police chase ended in their bedroom. The scene was filled with destruction—stuffed animals, shattered walls, and destroyed furniture marking the tragic site where the Yang family’s worst nightmare unfolded.
Eliza Yang, 18, and Mang Yang, 25, were both killed late Wednesday night when a car plowed into their bedroom. One sister was asleep, and the other was getting ready for work. “What can we do? We cannot do anything at all, but everybody is heartbroken because we lost our daughters,” said Ronald Yang, the victims’ uncle.
The crash occurred after an 18-year-old suspect, Adam Canales, sped away from Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies who had spotted him during a suspected gang disturbance. The pursuit, which lasted less than 30 seconds, ended when Canales’ white Chevy Tahoe crashed into the Yang family home, three streets away.
Eliza, a recent graduate of Fresno High School, and Mang, who was supporting her family while attending nursing school, lost their lives in the impact. Their father, devastated by the loss, clutched stuffed animals pulled from the wreckage. “He was looking around for his daughters but couldn’t find them,” Ronald Yang said. “One of their heads was sticking out the front door because the car had pushed her from the bedroom. The other was trapped under the rubble.”
Their father recounted the heartbreaking moment he found one of his daughters beneath the car. “I tried to pull her out, but it was too late. When I pulled her out, she wasn’t breathing. I lost her,” he said.
Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni confirmed that Canales was driving without a license or insurance and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. “If he had just pulled over, this could have been avoided. He is responsible for the deaths of two innocent girls,” Zanoni said. Canales fled the scene but was later arrested.
The Yang family, including six children who were inside the home during the crash, now face an unimaginable loss. Their home, which was severely damaged, is currently unlivable. “Our hearts are broken. We just don’t know what to do right now,” said Ronald Yang. The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and repairs to their home.
Both Eliza and Mang were described as kind and hardworking, with bright futures ahead. “They were very good kids. Nice daughters—one was working, and the other had just gone for a job interview a few days ago,” their uncle added.
The family is now asking for the community’s help in this difficult time as they mourn the loss of two beloved daughters and attempt to rebuild their shattered lives.
