The Gerald D. Hines Waterwall in Houston stands as a stunning tribute to the beauty and power of water. Towering at 64 feet, this semicircular masterpiece roars like Niagara Falls, evokes the artistry of a painting, and resembles a temple dedicated to our planet’s most precious resource when viewed from the front.

A Complement to the Skyline

Completed in 1985, the Waterwall was designed to complement the adjacent 64-story Williams Tower (formerly Transco Tower), Houston’s third-tallest skyscraper. Both landmarks are located near the Galleria, one of the largest shopping malls in the United States. The project was the vision of Gerald Hines, whose global real estate ventures were managed from his Houston-based company, Hines.

A Spectacle of Cascading Water

The Waterwall recycles 11,000 gallons of water, sending it cascading down its inner and outer surfaces in mesmerizing sheets. The fountain’s advanced filtration system processes approximately 80,000 gallons of water every 3.5 hours. In summer, the mist created at its base provides visitors with a welcome respite from the heat.

Contrasting Design Elements

The fountain’s interior wall is made of black obsidian aggregate, creating a striking contrast with the white water. Three archways, known as a scaenae frons (Latin for “theatrical backdrop”), serve as entrances and are reminiscent of Roman theatre stages.

A Green Oasis in the City

Beyond the water feature lies a 360-foot-long lawn, equivalent to the size of a football field, bordered by 186 live oak trees and a wide sidewalk. While ballgames are not permitted, the park offers a peaceful space for relaxation.

Parking and Accessibility

Visitors can find free parking at the Nordstrom parking garage at the Galleria or paid parking in the garage near the Williams Tower. Street parking is limited and often in high demand.

Preserving Public Access

Originally part of the Williams Tower property, the park surrounding the Waterwall was purchased in 2008 by the Uptown Houston Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, a semi-governmental organization. This acquisition ensured the park’s continued free access for the public.
