Syrian rebels have seized control of the capital, Damascus, marking a historic turning point in the country’s brutal civil war. President Bashar al-Assad has fled the city, signaling the end of his family’s decades-long rule. The rebels’ capture of the capital effectively ends more than 13 years of civil conflict, which has devastated the country and involved multiple foreign powers.

Following their victory, rebels stormed the Al-Rawda Presidential Palace, where some were seen removing furniture. Prisoners held by the Syrian government were also freed from a large jail on the outskirts of Damascus. Additionally, the Iranian embassy was overtaken by rebel forces, signaling a blow to Tehran’s influence in Syria. Hezbollah, a key ally of Assad, withdrew its forces as the rebels approached the capital, with reports confirming their pullback.

Assad’s Departure and the Collapse of His Regime
Syrian military officials confirmed Assad’s departure from Syria after he ordered a peaceful transition of power. His whereabouts, along with those of his wife and children, remain unknown. As rebel forces moved through the capital unopposed, a sense of celebration filled the streets as Syrians rejoiced in their newfound freedom, with many calling for free elections.

The Complex Future of Syrian Governance
Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed hope for free elections, but the future remains uncertain due to the complex landscape of competing rebel factions. These include Islamist groups and factions with ties to foreign powers such as the U.S., Russia, and Turkey. The U.S. has pledged to maintain its presence in eastern Syria to prevent a resurgence of ISIS, while Turkey continues its military operations in the north.

Russian and Iranian Influence Weakened
The collapse of Assad’s rule also marks a significant shift in regional power dynamics. Russia and Iran, long-time supporters of Assad, have seen their influence weakened, particularly after key Hezbollah leaders were killed in recent months by Israeli strikes. While Moscow maintains some military presence in Syria, its ability to support Assad has diminished due to its ongoing involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Islamist Groups, Including HTS, Gain Power
The Syrian rebel coalition, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), now holds significant sway. HTS, formerly affiliated with Al-Qaeda, severed its ties with the global jihadist movement in 2016. However, their increasing influence raises concerns among regional powers, including the UAE and Egypt, who see extremist groups as a direct threat to stability.

Challenges Ahead for Syria’s Transition
As Syria moves into a post-Assad era, the country faces the difficult task of stabilizing and rebuilding. With different factions vying for control, the transition could be chaotic, as seen in Iraq after the 2003 U.S. invasion. HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has expressed a desire for an orderly transition, but significant challenges remain, including international sanctions and the need for foreign aid to reconstruct the war-torn country.

Regional and Global Reactions to Assad’s Fall
The fall of Assad has sent shockwaves through the Middle East. Israel, which had long viewed Assad as an enemy, has reinforced its positions along the Syrian border. Reports also indicate Israeli airstrikes targeting sites in Syria, including a military airbase, in an effort to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of extremist groups.

While the rebel advances offer hope for a new chapter in Syria’s troubled history, the road ahead remains fraught with complexity. With multiple foreign interests and local power struggles at play, the future of Syria remains uncertain. The international community will play a key role in determining whether Syria can achieve stability, or whether it will descend further into fragmentation and chaos.
