A stampede during the premiere of Pushpa 2: The Rule at Sandhya Theatre, Chikkadpally, Hyderabad, on Wednesday night resulted in the tragic death of a 35-year-old woman and left her nine-year-old son critically injured.
Surprise Appearance Leads to Overcrowding
The incident unfolded when news spread that lead actor Allu Arjun and music director Devi Sri Prasad would make an unannounced appearance at the screening. Thousands of fans rushed to the cinema, leading to a chaotic crowd surge.
“There was no prior notice about their arrival, and no arrangements were made to control the crowd. The unexpected gathering caused immense crowd pressure, resulting in the stampede,” explained a police official from Chikkadpally.
Fatal Consequences and Medical Delays
As the overcrowded theatre spilled onto the streets, many attendees reportedly experienced suffocation. The woman succumbed to asphyxiation, as timely medical assistance, including CPR, was not provided. Her injured son was rushed to a private hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Negligence Sparks Legal Action
The police have announced plans to file a negligence case against the theatre management for failing to implement adequate safety measures.
Enhanced Security at Other Theatres
In response to the tragedy, heavy police deployment has been arranged at nearby cinemas to manage the crowd during subsequent screenings. Additional officers are on duty to ensure public safety.
A Chaotic Aftermath
The road outside Sandhya Theatre was strewn with confetti and discarded footwear, bearing witness to the disorder that unfolded during the event.
Calls for Better Crowd Management
The incident has sparked widespread concern about crowd management at high-profile public events. “The massive turnout overwhelmed everyone. In the future, better measures must be taken to ensure the safety of attendees,” said a police official.
