Shahmir Aziz, a senior at Harvard University from Lahore, Pakistan, has been named one of two Rhodes Scholars from Pakistan for 2025. The prestigious scholarship will allow Aziz to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford.
Breaking New Ground in Selection
Aziz’s selection is particularly notable, as a new rule introduced this year requires one of the two Rhodes Scholarships from Pakistan to be awarded to a student from a Pakistani university. Aziz is the only international recipient this year. He flew back to Pakistan for final interviews as one of 10 finalists and was announced as a winner on Saturday.
“Grateful and Humbled”
Expressing his gratitude, Aziz said he was deeply honored to be chosen. “The fact that I was selected from such a brilliant group of finalists validates my ambitions to make an impact in Pakistan,” he shared.
Harvard Roots and Academic Excellence
Aziz is an Adams House resident and a joint concentrator in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics, with a secondary concentration in Computer Science. He is also a former Crimson Sports Editor. He credited the scholarship application process with pushing him to reflect deeply on his interdisciplinary interests and future goals.
Linking Personal Experiences to Academic Research
“The application process was incredibly rewarding,” Aziz said. “I wrote about personal experiences with Pakistan’s healthcare system and connected them to the research I’ve done at Harvard.”

Oxford Plans: STEM Meets Diplomacy
At Oxford, Aziz plans to pursue a one-year master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, followed by another in Diplomacy and Global Governance. “While my academic focus is rooted in STEM, my extracurricular interests lean heavily toward international relations, public policy, and diplomacy,” he explained.
Building a Global Network
Aziz looks forward to engaging with the diverse community of Rhodes Scholars at Oxford. “I want to immerse myself in this community of scholars, many of whom will go on to hold influential positions worldwide. I hope to both learn from them and contribute to their perspectives,” he said.
A Commitment to Giving Back
Aziz emphasized the role his Harvard education has played in shaping his worldview and reiterated his dedication to serving Pakistan. “Growing up in Pakistan has given me everything I am today. With this privilege, I feel a responsibility to give back to my home country,” he said.
Aziz’s journey is an inspiring testament to his academic achievements and his vision for creating meaningful change in Pakistan and beyond.
