Several regions across the United States are currently experiencing extreme cold, and health experts warn that these freezing conditions are not only uncomfortable but can also be life-threatening in some cases. As temperatures drop rapidly, the risk of cold-related illnesses increases significantly. Hypothermia, frostbite, and even heart attacks are among the potential dangers associated with severe cold weather.

According to Dr. Alina Metina, an emergency room physician at Hackensack University Medical Center, children and elderly individuals are the most vulnerable and should avoid spending extended periods outdoors.

Dr. Metina says frostbite is the most common condition she treats in the emergency room. It typically affects fingers, toes, ears, and other exposed parts of the body. Early signs include skin turning pale and feeling cold to the touch. If not treated in time, frostbite can lead to permanent nerve damage.

Hypothermia is another major risk during extreme cold. Dr. Metina advises that anyone experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms include intense shivering, confusion, unsteady walking, or difficulty maintaining balance, all of which indicate that the body is rapidly losing heat.

Many people, including delivery workers and horse carriage drivers, do not have the option to stay indoors during such weather. For them, preparation is the best form of protection. Dr. Metina emphasizes the importance of wearing multiple layers, as layered clothing helps retain body heat.

Experts say that if someone feels they are approaching frostbite or hypothermia, taking immediate action can save lives. One effective method is skin-to-skin contact, such as placing cold hands under the armpits, to help restore body warmth until proper shelter or medical assistance becomes available.
