The prestigious World Building of the Year award was presented at the annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore, with Australia’s Darlington Public School taking top honors. Designed by fjcstudio, the school was praised for its sensitive and inclusive approach to early learning, as well as its connection to the local community and the environment.

A Sensitive, Inclusive Design for Early Learning

Located in the inner-city suburb of Darlington, Sydney, the school replaces a tired 1970s-era building that had long been in use. The project was carried out with minimal disruption, as the old school continued to operate during construction. Central to the design is the school’s strong connection to the local Aboriginal community, with a design process that emphasized collaboration, cost-effectiveness, and cultural sensitivity.

The school embraces indigenous culture through the inclusion of Aboriginal artworks that are displayed throughout the campus. Additionally, a community garden featuring indigenous plants serves as both an educational and cultural space where students can learn about indigenous cooking and traditions.

Design Features that Blend Form, Function, and Culture

The architectural design of Darlington Public School integrates both modern and passive elements. The school’s layout allows glimpses into an inner courtyard from the main entrance, with curving metal screens protecting outdoor learning and play areas, creating a soothing play of light and shadow. In keeping with sustainable design principles, the building features sawtooth roofs that angle toward the sun for optimal light, high-level glazing for indirect daylight, and curved screens that filter natural light into the interior.

Paul Finch, Programme Director of the World Architecture Festival, praised the design for its thoughtful approach: “The architect of the winning project explored and extended the formal program of the client, to include the views and experience of the local community and a variety of users… The result is a poetic building where topography and landscape, inside and outside, form and materials, flow seamlessly in an unexpectedly delightful way.” He also highlighted the project as an inspirational proposition about acknowledging historic differences and offering a path toward reconciliation.

Other Notable Winners at the World Architecture Festival

In addition to the World Building of the Year award, other prestigious accolades were presented at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.

World Interior of the Year 2023: Pang Mei Noodle Bar

The World Interior of the Year award was given to Pang Mei Noodle Bar, designed by Office AIO in Beijing. This flexible and functional space features a muted interior design that adapts to varying needs. A large roller shutter allows the space to expand and contract depending on the time of day, with the shutters closed during quieter hours and opened during peak times to create a full-service dining environment. The standout feature of the restaurant is its striking stainless steel superstructure that juts out above the bi-fold windows, adding a modern touch to the exterior.

Future Project of the Year 2023: Küçükçekmece Djemevi

The Future Project of the Year award was given to Küçükçekmece Djemevi in Istanbul, designed by EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture. This project, which is still under development, will serve as a gathering space for the Alevi Kurdish community. Drawing inspiration from traditional community rituals, the design seeks to foster unity and spiritual connection within the community.

From educational institutions that foster cultural understanding to interior spaces that adapt to the needs of their users, these award-winning projects reflect a growing emphasis on sustainability, inclusivity, and community. The recognition of Darlington Public School as World Building of the Year reinforces the importance of thoughtful, context-driven design in shaping a better future for all.
