Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, Sarfaraz Ahmed, has hinted that his playing career may soon be over. In a media interaction on Friday, ahead of the Champions T20 Cup, Sarfaraz made a sarcastic remark, implying that there was “nothing left to say” about his career, leading to speculation about his potential retirement.
Sarfaraz’s Cryptic Comments on Future
When questioned about his future with the national team, Sarfaraz replied, “Look, as far as my career is concerned, I think I don’t need to say anything. Nothing is left. I know what you are waiting for and it will happen soon.” These comments suggest that Sarfaraz is preparing to step away from international cricket.
Sarfaraz made his debut for Pakistan in 2007, and over the course of his career, he has played 54 Test matches, 117 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 61 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), accumulating 6,164 runs. His career also boasts six centuries and 32 half-centuries. Sarfaraz is perhaps most celebrated for leading Pakistan to its first-ever ICC Men’s Champions Trophy title in 2017. Additionally, under his captaincy, Pakistan set a record with 11 consecutive T20I series victories.

Recent Absence from National Team
However, Sarfaraz’s recent appearances for the national team have been few and far between. His last Test match for Pakistan was in 2023, where he was dropped after scoring only seven runs. His most recent white-ball appearance came in November 2021, and he has not featured in the national team since then.
Future Role as Mentor in Champions T20 Cup
Despite his limited involvement with the national side, Sarfaraz will continue his association with cricket as a mentor for the Faheem Ashraf-led Dolphins in the upcoming Champions T20 Cup. While he remains involved in the game, his playing career for Pakistan appears to be drawing to a close.
