Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar’s determination for the game seems to have been passed on to his child, Aryan Bangar, who has made a life-changing decision. Aryan, a well-known figure in cricket leagues, has undergone gender reassignment surgery and is now known as Anaya Bangar. She is one of the rare trans women who aspires to play cricket, but her path to competing professionally is fraught with challenges.
Anaya Bangar Opens Up About Hormone Replacement Therapy
On November 10, 2024, Anaya shared a video on her Instagram where she spoke candidly about her journey and the changes she has experienced due to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). In the video, Anaya reflected on the physical and emotional effects of the therapy, which she has been undergoing for the past 11 months. In an earlier post from August 2024, she discussed the toll that HRT has taken on her athleticism, revealing that her muscle mass, strength, and overall athletic abilities have significantly diminished since starting the treatment.

A Passion for Cricket Faces New Barriers
Anaya, who has scored many runs playing for clubs like Islam Gymkhana and Hinckley Cricket Club in Leicestershire, has now confronted the harsh reality that she may never play cricket professionally again. She expressed her deep disappointment that her dream of representing her country in cricket may be unattainable due to the restrictions placed on trans women athletes.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Anaya shared her struggles with the sport she has loved all her life. Despite her testosterone levels now being reduced to 0.5 nmol, Anaya is finding it difficult to meet the eligibility criteria set by sports boards for transgender athletes. She never imagined that her gender transition would force her to step away from the sport she holds dear.

England and Wales Cricket Board’s Transgender Ban
Anaya’s situation is complicated further by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)’s recent decision to ban transgender women from playing at the elite level of women’s domestic cricket starting in 2025. According to the new policy, any trans woman who transitions after reaching male puberty will be ineligible to play in the top two tiers of the women’s cricket game. This ban aligns with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision in November 2023, making it even more challenging for athletes like Anaya to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

A Challenging Future for Transgender Athletes in Cricket
Currently living in Manchester, Anaya’s future in cricket remains uncertain. While it has not been disclosed which team she plays for, the ongoing discrimination and lack of support for trans women in the sport present significant barriers. Despite her incredible achievements and love for the game, Anaya’s story highlights the systemic obstacles that transgender athletes face in trying to pursue professional careers in sports.

Anaya’s journey serves as a reminder of the broader challenges that transgender individuals encounter in seeking equality and acceptance in competitive environments, especially in sports that are often slow to adapt to evolving societal standards.
