Russia and Pakistan are set to be linked via a new freight train line, as bilateral ties deepen. Pakistan’s Energy Minister, Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, revealed in an interview with RT that the first trial run of the south-north train will commence in March next year. The route will transport goods from Russia to Pakistan through Iran and Azerbaijan.

Pakistan Joins International Transport Corridor
Pakistan has expressed its intent to join the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200 km-long network connecting Russia and Central Asia with India via Iran. This announcement was initially made by Pakistan’s ambassador to Moscow, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, during the International IT Forum in Khanty-Mansiysk earlier this year.

Leghari also highlighted ongoing discussions between Moscow and Islamabad regarding direct air connectivity. Both nations have shown significant interest in launching airline services “very soon,” which is expected to enhance people-to-people interactions and facilitate trade.

Collaborative Projects and Strategic Dialogue
In October, bilateral transport and logistics projects were a focal point during a visit by a Russian Federation Council delegation to Islamabad. Chairwoman Valentina Matvienko underscored the importance of establishing new logistics corridors, describing them as pivotal for political and economic relations. Leghari emphasized that these initiatives would boost business ties and foster easier communication between the two nations.

Eight MoUs Signed Between Islamabad and Moscow
This week, Pakistan and Russia signed eight memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in sectors such as health, trade, industrial cooperation, and education. These agreements were finalized during the Inter-Governmental Commission meeting, which has been operational for over a decade.

Trade Dynamics and Opportunities
Bilateral trade between Russia and Pakistan currently stands at around $1 billion. While acknowledging the positive growth in trade, Leghari pointed out the significant trade imbalance between the two countries. He suggested that Pakistan’s agricultural exports could play a critical role in addressing this disparity by supplying food products to Russia.

Energy Cooperation Expands
Russia and Pakistan are also exploring opportunities in energy collaboration. Moscow’s Deputy Energy Minister, Roman Marshavin, confirmed ongoing discussions about Russian participation in Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration and refining projects. Stable oil supplies from Russia to Pakistan have been established, with plans to diversify and expand the range of energy products in the near future.

These developments mark a significant step forward in strengthening Pakistan-Russia relations, with a focus on mutual economic growth and strategic connectivity.
