Peruvian President Dina Boluarte is under fire for undergoing a rhinoplasty in mid-2023 without delegating her presidential responsibilities during the recovery period. The 62-year-old president’s procedure, initially reported by local media, was confirmed Tuesday by former Prime Minister Alberto Otarola during a congressional inquiry.
“She informed me she was having nose surgery for breathing issues,” Otarola told lawmakers.
The inquiry is investigating Boluarte’s whereabouts between June 28 and July 10, 2023, when she disappeared from public engagements. Reports indicate she underwent surgery at a Lima clinic but did not notify the public or formally transfer her powers to Congress.
Criticism from Lawmakers
Some lawmakers argue that Boluarte’s decision to manage presidential duties virtually during her recovery violates constitutional protocol.
“She should have sought Congress’s permission. This is grounds for dismissal,” said Juan Burgos, head of the congressional oversight commission.

Others, including Congress Vice President Patricia Juarez, downplayed the issue, calling it “a storm in a glass of water.”
Ongoing Allegations Against Boluarte
The rhinoplasty controversy adds to Boluarte’s mounting political troubles. Prosecutors have accused her of accepting bribes, including luxury Rolex watches, and she faces allegations of responsibility for over 50 protester deaths during anti-government demonstrations in 2022.
Her popularity has plummeted, with disapproval ratings nearing 95%. Boluarte, who lacks her own political party in Congress, is slated to remain in office until July 2026.
A Leadership Under Scrutiny
Critics argue that Boluarte’s actions undermine trust in her leadership, while supporters view the latest uproar as a distraction from more pressing national issues. Whether this incident will further destabilize her presidency remains to be seen.
