Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, has expressed his anticipation for a response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) concerning the participation of the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Champions Trophy. He confirmed that all other qualifying teams are prepared to visit Pakistan and invited India to discuss any reservations directly so they can be addressed.
Ensuring Stadium Readiness for Champions Trophy
During his visit to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Naqvi informed the media that the ongoing construction work at the stadium is being carefully monitored and will be completed on schedule to host the Champions Trophy successfully. He emphasized the importance of keeping politics separate from sports, stating that cricket should remain free from political influence.
ICC Correspondence and Awaited Reply
Responding to questions, Naqvi clarified that PCB has officially communicated with the ICC and is awaiting their response. He reiterated that PCB’s contact is solely with the ICC, hoping for an update soon.

Politics and Sports: A Call for Separation
Addressing concerns over India’s participation, Naqvi remarked, “I firmly believe that sports and politics are distinct and should not be mixed. It is important not to involve any country unnecessarily. I remain optimistic for a positive outcome.”
Concerns Over Trophy Movement and ICC’s Role
When asked about potential issues related to moving the Champions Trophy 2025 to Kashmir, Naqvi pointed out that the ICC must consider its global standing as a representative body of cricket. He noted that while some adjustments might be necessary, there has been no information about event cancellation. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is responsible for announcing the event schedule, and PCB is preparing accordingly.
Extending an Olive Branch to India
Naqvi reiterated that all participating teams are ready to come to Pakistan, and there have been no issues from any team except India. “If India has concerns, they should talk to us. We are willing to resolve any apprehensions they have. There is no valid reason preventing the Indian team’s visit, as Pakistan’s honor is paramount, and our stance is unwavering,” he stated.
Gaddafi Stadium Renovations and Interim Coaching Strategy
He assured that renovations at Gaddafi Stadium would be completed in time for the tournament. Additionally, Naqvi revealed that Aqib Javed has been approached to serve as interim head coach until the Champions Trophy. This decision avoids hurried appointments that could disrupt the team’s preparation. Aqib Javed will oversee the team for the next three months, during which plans for appointing a long-term head coach will be finalized. Naqvi mentioned that detailed plans would be discussed over the next couple of weeks to ensure the best candidate is selected.
