As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, Pakistani Americans are emerging as a pivotal voting group, with the potential to shape outcomes in closely contested states. With over 625,000 people, this community’s influence, particularly in urban areas, could be decisive in determining the next president.
Historically, Pakistani Americans have leaned towards the Democratic Party. In the 2020 election, a striking 89% voted for Joe Biden. But recent global and domestic events are leading some to reconsider their political alignment. Two key issues are driving this shift:
1. The Gaza Conflict: Many Pakistani Americans are deeply dissatisfied with President Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza, feeling that it reflects poorly on U.S. foreign policy.
2. Imran Khan’s Imprisonment: The jailing of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has resonated with the community. Some believe that a Trump presidency might offer diplomatic leverage to free Khan, influencing pro-Trump sentiments.
Tahir Javed, a prominent Pakistani American businessman and Democrat, observes a growing divide: “The Pakistani community is split in huge numbers now.” This rift could dramatically influence how the community votes in 2024. However, experts like Michael Kugelman from the Wilson Center caution against expecting too much from Trump regarding Khan’s situation. “If Trump were to return to power, his focus would not be on helping Imran Khan,” Kugelman notes.

Beyond international affairs, Pakistani Americans are becoming increasingly active in local politics. In 2022, two Pakistani Americans were elected to the Texas state assembly, marking a significant milestone in the community’s growing political engagement. This heightened involvement, particularly among younger generations, signals a broader trend of political empowerment.
While foreign policy remains important, domestic issues are equally pressing for Pakistani American voters. Key concerns include Immigration reform, Healthcare access, Quality education and Combatting discrimination against Muslims.
Local leaders are encouraging political engagement by organizing voter registration drives and advocating for greater visibility in the democratic process. The community is being urged to step up, volunteer, and make their voices heard, especially in battleground states where their votes could tip the scale.

As the 2024 election nears, both Republicans and Democrats are likely to increase outreach to this growing electorate. Pakistani Americans’ evolving political views and participation reflect larger demographic shifts in U.S. politics, where immigrant communities are not only voting but shaping policy debates. Looking ahead, the 2024 election will be a litmus test for the political power of Pakistani Americans. Their voting patterns could offer deeper insights into how immigrant groups are influencing the ever-changing American political landscape.
