Pakistan has urged the United States to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and supporting its democratic reforms rather than passing “unconstructive” resolutions. This stance was discussed during a Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs meeting chaired by Senator Irfanul Haq Siddiqui.
Response to U.S. House Resolution 901
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Pakistan’s response to the U.S. House Resolution 901, passed in June 2024, which called for upholding democratic institutions and human rights in Pakistan. The foreign ministry criticized the resolution for its lack of understanding of Pakistan’s political landscape.
In response, Pakistan’s embassy in Washington circulated a counter-resolution passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan, rejecting the U.S. stance as based on unsubstantiated allegations. Efforts are ongoing to engage the U.S. Congress in more balanced and informed discussions about Pakistan’s democratic progress and human rights advancements.
Condemnation of Israeli Actions Against UNRWA
During the meeting, senators condemned recent Israeli legislation targeting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), expressing concern over its implications.
Evacuation of Pakistanis from Syria
Foreign ministry officials provided updates on the evacuation of Pakistanis trapped in Syria. Out of 180 pilgrims, 170 have been successfully allowed to leave for Lebanon.
This progress follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s engagement with the Lebanese government, which has facilitated visa issuance at the border and transportation to Beirut via buses. Urgent measures are being taken to ensure the safety and swift evacuation of all remaining individuals.
