On Wednesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump as he neared a victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, potentially marking a stunning political comeback for Trump four years after leaving the White House.
Trump on the Verge of Victory as Key Battleground States Fall in His Favor
While other news outlets had yet to officially call the race, Trump seemed poised to win after securing key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia, while holding leads in four other critical states, according to Edison Research. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who was trailing, did not address her supporters at Howard University, her alma mater. Instead, her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, briefly spoke to the crowd after midnight, assuring them that Harris would speak publicly on Wednesday, and that several votes were still being counted.

Prime Minister Sharif Sends Congratulatory Message
Sharif offered his congratulations to Trump on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump on his historic victory for a second term. I look forward to working closely with the incoming administration to further strengthen and broaden the Pakistan-US partnership.”
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, a key member of Sharif’s coalition government, also congratulated Trump and his team. Zardari framed the victory as an “anti-war mandate,” expressing hope that the new administration would prioritize global peace and help break the cycle of ongoing conflict.

US-Pakistan Relations Under Scrutiny
The US-Pakistan relationship has been through a series of challenges, with tensions rising over Pakistan’s alleged support for the Taliban in Afghanistan, which Pakistan has consistently denied. Under former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who governed from 2018 to 2022, relations with Washington worsened further. Khan’s administration angered the US by endorsing the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 and later accusing Washington of orchestrating efforts to oust him. The US dismissed these claims as unfounded.
Sharif Government Seeks to Repair Relations with Washington
Since the transition to Sharif’s government, efforts have been made to restore ties with the US. However, analysts believe that despite efforts to improve relations, the United States is unlikely to significantly expand its partnership with Pakistan in the near future, with the focus largely remaining on security concerns.
