In her new memoir titled Melania, former First Lady Melania Trump reflects on the early days of her modeling career, including a talent competition that turned sour when her prize money disappeared.
From Aspiring Architect to Model
Initially, Melania envisioned a career as an architect, viewing her passion for fashion and modeling as merely a hobby. However, her path changed when she met an Italian movie producer who invited her to enter a modeling contest in Italy designed to find a “new face for the movies.” Hosted by Cinecittà, a prestigious European film studio, the contest promised a cash prize and a role in an upcoming film.

A Confident Debut at the Competition
Upon arriving at the competition, Melania felt a “sense of calm confidence,” believing her “elegance and poise” would set her apart. She considered these traits a reflection of her “authenticity” and a pathway to success. As she walked down the runway, she captured the audience’s attention and ultimately won the competition, receiving applause, gifts, and an envelope containing her prize money.
A Disheartening Discovery
Melania entrusted her prize money envelope to an event organizer for safekeeping. However, when her belongings were returned, the envelope was mysteriously missing. Her attempts to locate the missing funds were met with “confusion and ignorance,” leading to feelings of deep “betrayal.” Instead of celebrating her victory, she returned home with a sense of “disappointment,” not just over the lost money but due to the dishonorable manner in which it had disappeared.

A Firm Refusal to Engage with Deceit
The situation took another turn when an organizer from the studio reached out a week later, inviting Melania to collaborate again. However, she firmly declined, stating, “My answer was a resounding no. I had no desire to associate with individuals of such a deceitful nature.” Melania concludes that “dishonesty has no place” in her life and “never will.”
