New York City is ramping up snow removal operations after a powerful winter storm buried large parts of the city under heavy snow and ice. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that emergency snow shovelers will now be paid $30 per hour, an increase aimed at attracting more workers to speed up the cleanup process.

City officials said the enhanced pay rate reflects the urgent need to restore normalcy as transportation, pedestrian movement, and daily activities were disrupted by the storm. Snow and ice accumulation has made sidewalks, bus stops, crosswalks, and fire hydrants difficult to access, creating safety concerns for residents and emergency responders.

The temporary workers, hired on a per diem basis, play a crucial role in clearing public spaces that are not immediately handled by plows. Their work ensures that commuters can safely access public transit and that fire hydrants remain visible and reachable in case of emergencies.

The Department of Sanitation is managing the recruitment process. Walk-in applicants are being accepted at sanitation garages across the city until 8 p.m. Monday and again starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Officials have emphasized that applicants must present two valid forms of identification along with a Social Security card.

Authorities are encouraging physically fit individuals who can work in cold weather conditions to apply. The city has also reminded residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to allow snow removal crews space to perform their duties efficiently.

Officials say cleanup operations will continue around the clock until streets and pedestrian pathways are fully cleared, as the city works to recover from one of the season’s most significant snow events.
