Malaysia’s nearly century-old former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was discharged from the hospital on Monday following a two-week stay due to a respiratory infection, his office confirmed on Tuesday. Despite his recent health challenges, the former leader plans to resume work as usual.
Brief Hospitalization for Respiratory Issues
Mahathir, who turned 99 in July, was hospitalized shortly after his birthday due to persistent coughing. Earlier this year, he spent nearly three months in the hospital for other health issues.
Political Legacy and Continued Influence
Mahathir served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003 and briefly returned to office in 2018 at the age of 92. His coalition government, however, collapsed two years later due to internal conflicts. Though he lost his parliamentary seat in 2022, Mahathir remains politically active and has become a vocal critic of current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
