Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been detained in Tehran, the Italian foreign ministry confirmed on Friday. Sala, who was in the Iranian capital for reporting purposes, was apprehended by Tehran police on December 19.

Efforts to Ensure Her Safety
The Italian foreign ministry stated it is working with Iranian authorities to clarify Sala’s legal situation and ensure her well-being. Ambassador Paola Amadei visited Sala in prison on Friday to assess her condition. Sala has also been allowed two phone calls with her family since her detention.

Background of the Journalist
Sala is a reporter for the Italian daily Il Foglio. The publication revealed that she is currently being held in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. According to Il Foglio, Sala entered Iran on a valid visa to cover stories in a country she deeply admires, despite its repression of free speech and risks to journalists.

Support from the Media
Claudio Cerasa, editor of Il Foglio, emphasized the injustice of Sala’s detention, stating, “Journalism is not a crime. Let’s bring Cecilia Sala home.” He also highlighted the symbolic nature of her imprisonment, saying, “Tehran’s actions challenge everything the West holds dear: freedom of expression.” Cerasa reassured readers that reporting on Sala’s situation would not impede diplomatic efforts to secure her release.

Contributions to Journalism
Sala also works with Chora Media, which noted that she left Rome on December 12 with a valid journalistic visa. During her time in Iran, she conducted interviews and produced episodes of the “Stories” podcast for Chora News. The outlet refrained from publicizing her detention earlier, respecting the wishes of her family and Italian authorities, who hoped for a swift resolution.

Italian Government’s Response
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the government is actively working to secure Sala’s release. However, he acknowledged the complexity of negotiations with Iran, emphasizing that diplomacy, rather than public outrage, is key to resolving the situation.

Recent Work and Impact
Sala’s recent Instagram posts document her interactions with Iranian women, showcasing her commitment to highlighting their stories. Her arrest has sparked widespread concern and reinforced calls for press freedom worldwide.
