Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and seven top executives, including his nephew Sagar Adani, have been charged in New York for their alleged roles in a massive fraud and bribery scheme. The indictment accuses the group of paying over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Wednesday.
Bribery to Secure Solar Energy Deals
The DOJ alleges that the bribes were part of a broader plan to mislead investors and banks to raise billions of dollars while obstructing justice. Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa Miller stated that the fraudulent contracts, which were projected to generate more than $2 billion in post-tax profits over two decades, relied heavily on the bribery scheme.
Evidence of Coordinated Fraud
Investigators uncovered detailed evidence, including phone records, photographs of bribery-related documents, and PowerPoint and Excel files summarizing payment methods and concealment strategies. The DOJ claims that Adani personally met with an Indian government official to push the scheme forward.

Hiding Misconduct from US Investors
The DOJ also alleges that the Adani Group concealed the bribery scheme from US investors to secure financing for projects gained through illegal means. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched parallel charges against Adani and Azure Power Global executive Cyril Cabanes for misleading US investors and raising $175 million based on fraudulent representations.
Fallout from Hindenburg Research Report
This indictment follows earlier allegations by US short-seller Hindenburg Research in January 2023. The report accused the Adani Group of stock manipulation and accounting fraud, leading to a collapse in the billionaire’s fortune by over $80 billion. Despite a 400-page rebuttal by the Adani Group, the report highlighted concerns about the company’s debt and inflated valuations.
Adani’s Wealth and Influence
Currently valued at $85.5 billion, Adani is the founder of the Adani Group, a conglomerate with interests in ports, power, clean energy, and media. He is widely considered a close ally of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and began his career in diamond trading before expanding into multiple sectors.
Ongoing Investigations
The charges have sent shockwaves through the global business community, with both the DOJ and SEC emphasizing the need for accountability. Pulse News has reached out to Adani Enterprises for comment on the allegations.
