When either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris becomes the next U.S. president, they’ll step into a role that’s not just powerful but also uniquely compensated. Although the president’s pay differs from the average American worker’s, it remains a salary from the state.

Presidential Salary vs. Average American Income While the average American earns around $44,500 (approximately Rs 37.41 lakh) annually, the U.S. president receives a significantly higher salary of $400,000 (Rs 3.36 crore). In addition to this base salary, the president is granted a $50,000 expense allowance, a $100,000 non-taxable travel budget, and $19,000 for entertainment, totaling about $569,000 (Rs 4.78 crore) annually. Any unspent portion of the expense allowance must be returned to the treasury.

Additional Perks and Allowances The president also receives $100,000 for White House redecorations, though some, like Barack Obama, opted to fund this themselves. The First Lady, however, receives no salary. Moreover, the president has access to transportation on Air Force One, Marine One, and the presidential limousine, as well as free accommodation in the White House. After leaving office, the president is entitled to an annual pension of $200,000, healthcare, and official travel.

Founders’ Intentions on Presidential Pay The U.S. Founding Fathers believed the president should be compensated to maintain independence. Alexander Hamilton argued that an unpaid president could be vulnerable to external influence. Legally, presidents must accept their salary but can donate it; George Washington initially wanted to forgo his pay but was required by Congress to accept it. Several presidents, like Herbert Hoover, John F. Kennedy, and Donald Trump, donated their salaries to charitable causes.

How Does the U.S. President’s Salary Compare Globally? Despite the significant salary, the U.S. president isn’t the highest-paid world leader. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, earns around $1.69 million (Rs 14.20 crore), with Hong Kong’s leader, John Lee Ka-chiu, and Switzerland’s President, Viola Amherd, following closely behind. In comparison, Ethiopia’s prime minister earns just $1,700 annually, showing a stark contrast in global leadership salaries.

The Impact of Inflation on Presidential Salary Though the U.S. presidency remains a powerful position, inflation has steadily reduced the real value of the president’s salary over time. For example, George Washington’s initial salary of $25,000 in 1789 would equate to $895,741 today. The last increase in presidential pay came in 2001, but inflation since then has eroded its purchasing power.

Wealth vs. Salary: The Real Motive for Running While the presidential salary has declined in real value, it’s unlikely to be a primary motivator for candidates like Kamala Harris, with a net worth of around $8 million, or Donald Trump, whose wealth is estimated at $3.9 billion, according to recent Forbes reports.
