Karachi: South Asia’s Chosen Sister City
While addressing an audience at the Press Club, Sheikh shed light on the dynamic work of the HKSCA—one of the most active sister city organizations in the United States. Established in 2009, the Houston-Karachi partnership holds the honor of being South Asia’s only sister city formally recognized by the City of Houston. Sheikh proudly noted that many international cities had shown interest in such a partnership, but Houston chose Karachi, solidifying its special role as South Asia’s representative.

“Even if cities from neighboring countries express interest, Houston reminds them—Karachi already represents South Asia,” said Sheikh, celebrating the pride this brings to the city and its people.
Overseas Pakistanis Key to Economic Growth
Sheikh also participated in the Overseas Pakistanis Convention, where he passionately spoke about Pakistan’s economic challenges. He stressed the critical need for sustainable development and expressed the unwavering support of overseas Pakistanis, who are eager to offer their resources, experience, and expertise to uplift their homeland.
Welfare Initiatives for the Underserved
The HKSCA’s impact goes far beyond symbolic friendship. Sheikh highlighted multiple welfare efforts led by the association in partnership with Helping Hands Development. These include:
- Installation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants for clean drinking water
- Regular medicine supply to remote hospitals and low-income communities
- Ongoing scholarship programs for deserving Pakistani students studying in Houston
He also shared exciting news about upcoming permanent scholarships for Karachi students at the University of Houston—an initiative aimed at creating long-term educational opportunities.
A Helping Hand for Pakistanis Abroad
“The association stands by Pakistani students in the U.S. in times of crisis,” Sheikh added. Whether it’s financial hardship, academic support, or emotional guidance, the HKSCA ensures that no Pakistani feels alone while abroad.
Cricket Academy Collaboration to Shape Future Stars
In a special announcement, Sheikh introduced a new sports development project in collaboration with former cricketer Jalaluddin’s Cricket Academy and Helping Hands. The initiative focuses on training 24 talented young children with the vision of one day seeing them wear Pakistan’s colors on the international cricket stage.
