Frank Caprio, the longtime Rhode Island judge whose compassion in the courtroom made him a global icon, passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

His family announced his passing on his official Facebook page, writing: “Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully. He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.”

Just a day earlier, on August 19, Caprio shared an emotional video message from his hospital bed, telling followers that he had suffered a setback and once again asked for their prayers. In what would become his final words to the public, he said: “The Almighty above is looking over us, so remember me please.”

Born and raised in Providence, Caprio graduated from Suffolk University Law School and began his judicial career in 1985. He served until his retirement in 2023, becoming one of Rhode Island’s most respected public figures. He rose to international fame through the courtroom reality series Caught in Providence, where his empathetic rulings and gentle humor captivated millions. The show, which aired nationally from 2018 to 2020, earned four Daytime Emmy nominations and brought his unique approach to justice to audiences worldwide.

Caprio’s humanity was evident both on and off the bench. Known for balancing the letter of the law with compassion, he often listened to the personal struggles of defendants and responded with kindness. Clips of his judgments went viral across social media, earning him the reputation of “America’s nicest judge.”

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2023, a battle he faced with courage and openness. After six months of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiation therapy, Caprio celebrated the end of treatment in May 2024 by ringing the “bell of healing” at the Miami Cancer Institute, receiving a standing ovation from family, friends, and medical staff. Despite his resilience, the disease returned, and he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones.

The Caprio family remembered him in a heartfelt statement: “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

Caprio is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy—as a jurist, community leader, and symbol of kindness—will endure in the countless lives he inspired.
