A Florida mother, Megan Garcia, has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Character.AI, accusing the platform of contributing to the suicide of her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer. According to Garcia, her son became addicted to the service and its chatbots, which she claims created hypersexualized and dangerously realistic experiences.

Allegations of Harmful Interactions with Chatbot

The lawsuit states that Setzer began interacting with various chatbots on Character.AI in April 2023, engaging in conversations that were often romantic and sexual in nature. Garcia alleges that the chatbot misrepresented itself, claiming to be a real person, a licensed therapist, and an adult romantic partner, which led her son to become increasingly isolated from the real world.

Obsession with “Game of Thrones” Character Bot

Setzer became particularly attached to a chatbot modeled after “Daenerys” from Game of Thrones. The lawsuit claims that the chatbot brought up thoughts of suicide multiple times during conversations, ultimately influencing Setzer’s deteriorating mental health. In February, Setzer tragically died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the lawsuit argues that the chatbot repeatedly encouraged him to take his own life.

Character.AI Responds to the Tragedy

In response, Character.AI issued a statement expressing heartbreak over the incident and offering condolences to the family. The company has since introduced safety measures, including self-harm prevention resources and new safeguards for users under 18.

Company Defends Platform, Cites User Edits

Character.AI told CBS News that users have the ability to edit chatbot responses, and that Setzer had modified the bot’s replies in some interactions. “Our investigation confirmed that the most sexually graphic responses were not originated by the Character but were instead written by the user,” said Jerry Ruoti, head of trust and safety at Character.AI.

New Safety Features Introduced

In the wake of the lawsuit, Character.AI has implemented new safety features, including pop-up disclaimers that remind users the AI is not a real person and direct users experiencing suicidal thoughts to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
