The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled a board meeting on Friday, November 29, to resolve the ongoing dispute over the 2025 Champions Trophy. The meeting will focus on whether Pakistan retains its hosting rights or if the event will be moved elsewhere through a voting process.

Pakistan Stands Firm Against Hybrid Model
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has rejected proposals for a hybrid hosting model or financial incentives to co-host matches with other countries. PCB sources insist the tournament must be hosted entirely in Pakistan, marking the country’s first ICC event since 1996.

India’s Role in the Dispute
India has refused to participate in the tournament in Pakistan, citing a lack of government clearance. This refusal came as PCB was preparing to announce the event schedule, prompting pressure on Pakistan to accept a hybrid model. The unresolved issue has now escalated to the ICC Board for final deliberation.

Potential Consequences of Relocation
If Pakistan refuses to accept the hybrid model, ICC may vote to strip the country of its hosting rights. Such a decision could lead to Pakistan boycotting the tournament or refusing to play against India. However, broadcasters are unlikely to support a boycott due to its financial implications.

Financial Stakes and Legal Preparations
The PCB has invested over PKR 13 billion in upgrading stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in preparation for the tournament. A relocation would result in significant losses, though ICC may offer compensation. PCB, however, has ruled out accepting financial settlements and is preparing for potential legal action, consulting lawyers in London.

India’s Influence in ICC Decision-Making
India’s financial dominance in the ICC provides it with considerable leverage. This influence is expected to grow further when Jay Shah assumes ICC leadership next month, potentially swaying decisions in India’s favor.

ICC Board Composition
The 17-member ICC Board, chaired by Greg Barclay, includes representatives from major cricketing nations and associate members. Pakistan will be represented by Mohsin Naqvi, with India’s Jay Shah among other prominent board members.

The meeting’s outcome will determine whether the Champions Trophy remains in Pakistan or shifts to another host country, shaping the future of cricket in the region.
